Class Description

In this one-day workshop we will show you how to use both small and large flashes for portraiture. You will learn about the various common portrait lighting patterns, and how to setup 1, 2 and 3 lights to create these classic looks. All the equipment used in a studio, including flash meters and radio transmitters, will be provided. If you are just getting into studio portraiture, whether this in a studio-type environment or on location, this workshop will give you everything you need to make informed buying decisions and get started on the road to making great portraits.

We will use various modifiers (umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, etc.) and backgrounds to create a variety of exciting looks, including both low and high-key images. This workshop is very hands-on, and you will be quickly be able to put into practice all the techniques you learn by working with a model.

At the conclusion of this class, you will know how you can quickly and easily create great results with even just one flash. If you really want to understand the basics of studio lighting, this class is definitely for you. Please note, that i order to maximize the time each student gets to photograph the model, the class size for this workshop is strictly limited.

A professional educator, John has been involved in photography for over 30 years. Together with Susan, he is co-owner of both Harmon’s School of Photography and Catchlight Studios Photography. John is mainly a people photographer, but also enjoys travel and fine art photography.
